Bring It On!

Many years ago, I worked as an Admin for the Test Development Engineering (“TDE”) Group at Intel Corporation. Basically, I did all the administrative support for a group of 10 people.

When I began the job, Intel had an (online) Acronym Library of about 10,000 acronyms. In the following few years, that library grew to over 250,000 acronyms. And the first TDE meeting that I attended – wherein I was to take the “Minutes” (notes) – I understood the words “and”, “but”, “for”, and some common (English) language; the rest of the meeting was in a high-tech language that I did not understand, even though it was in English.

Thank goodness Intel Corporation had a Mentorship policy. I could get the help I needed.

Like every employee – both new and seasoned – I was assigned a Mentor to help me get oriented and become successful in my work. My (Intel Corp) Mentor was there to answer my needs at every turn…except for when he was busy, or I was too busy to take his call. Intel could have assigned an “Alternate Mentor”, as a backup go-to person in those busy times.

So, I ask you: Does your organization make use of a Mentor program/policy? If not, you might want to consider suggesting a Mentorship program to the boss. It does not increase overhead, and yet it enhances revenues in both seen, and unseen ways. It also dramatically reduces turnover.

Now, if you do have a Mentor program or policy at your workplace, that is great.
